The mechanism that is responsible for how polar ice shelves melt may have been discovered by a fleet of robotic ocean gliders.

Extremely harsh winters in Europe and Asia may have been started by the melt or decline in the Arctic sea ice. Japanese researchers wrote that it may have been initiated through the excitation of circulation anomalies similar to the Arctic Oscillation.

A notebook dating back 100 years was recently spotted by researchers in Antarctica. The notebook was left behind by Captain Scott's last expedition base at Cape Evans.

A planet very similar to Uranus, located 25,000 light years from Earth, has been discovered. The finding is unusual because while astronomers have discovered a number of planets throughout the Milky Way galaxy, including rocky ones like Earth and gaseous ones like Jupiter, this is the closest known ice giant to our solar system.

Sea ice surrounding Antarctica reached a new record high this year. It has covered more of the southern oceans than it has since scientists began a long-term satellite record to map sea ice extent in the late 1970s.

A record amount of Pacific walruses are coming ashore in northwest Alaska since they are unable to find sea ice for resting in the warming Arctic waters.

West Antarctica has lost a large amount of weight due to melting ice, and new research by the European Space Agency's Gravity field & steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) satellite has shown that it can be felt from space.

Antarctica has set a sea ice record, which is odd considering the rising global temperature. Scientists have said global warming is actually the reason for the increase.

Life has been discovered to exist in extreme ecosystems beneath the icy sheets covering Antarctica. The finding raises the possibility that similar environments in the solar system could harbor life.

Gigantic waves reaching 16 feet high in the Beaufort Sea have reached record highs. The sea, which is part of the Arctic Ocean, is no longer covered with constant layers of ice. Researchers say the constant melting is due to global warming.

Melting sea ice is being studied like it never has before. Scientists have placed sensors on and under ice in the Beaufort Sea for an unprecedented campaign to monitor the summer melt.

Archaeologists have asked hikers to help them in recovering potential ancient remains and artifacts as the ice on the Swiss Alps starts and continues to melt.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has declared that for the first time in 7 months, the Great Lakes are free of ice. With that announcement, summer officially started in the Great Lakes region.
