Facebook Stock Down With Teens; Prefer Twitter, But Instagram Gaining Ground, Piper Jaffray Says

Facebook is no longer the face of social media to teenagers, according to new data from Piper Jaffray.

Piper Jaffray's semi-annual "Taking Stock With Teens" report found that Twitter is now the go-to site for the most teens, with 26 percent naming it as their "most important" social site. Facebook claimed 23 percent of the vote, which was down from 33 percent six months ago and 42 percent a year ago.

Twitter's reign at the top might be short-lived, however, as Facebook-owned Instagram got 23 percent of the vote for "most important" site, up from 12 percent last year. Twitter's "stock" with teens has decreased in the past six months, as well. Business Insider's Jim Edwards sees this trend favoring Instagram, and points to a recent Pew report, which suggests the popular photo service will surpass both Facebook and Twitter, as further validation.

Though Facebook might be on the decline with teens, another Pew study suggests a good deal of American adults actually use the site to get the news.

Almost half of all the users of Facebook, the world's largest social network, turn to the site to learn about the day's top news stories, according to a recent survey of 5,173 adults aged 18-years or older.

The study discovered that 47 percent of adult Facebook users in the U.S. and 30 percent of all U.S. adults use Facebook as a news site.

The survey, conducted August 21 to September 2 by the Pew Research Center in collaboration with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, found that of the 5,173 adults in their study, 3,268 are Facebook users and 1,429 login to Facebook for the news.

So what qualifies as "news," you might ask? Pew defined it as "information about events and issues that involve more than just your friends or family" and Facebook news consumers were defined as anyone who "ever get news or news headlines on Facebook." The statistics are a testament to Facebook's power to keep users on its site, as 78 percent arrived on the site for other reasons and only 4 percent called Facebook the most important way they get news.
