Nicola and Elda Fabrizio originally founded Dedar, an acronym for Design D'Arredamento, in '76. Nicola had previous experience in producing and designing Italian furniture and Elda had always an affinity for textiles. The idea to produce some of the world's finest fabrics was then conceived by the husband and wife duo and even today continues to be a shared passion within the Fabrizio family.

In recent years, Nicola and Elda's son and daughter, Raffaele and Caterina, have become the sole creatives behind the company.

Located near Como, the headquarters is in one of the oldest European manufacturing districts, which allows Dedar the opportunity to work and collaborate with authentic textile craftsmen and specialists in Italy.

The beauty of Dedar is its commitment to create the highest quality of fabrics and produce designs at such a level alongside the skilled commerce surrounding them.

Just 15 years ago the company consisted of 12 employees and today, the team has grown to 100 individuals internationally. The Dedar Collection offers several articles and color possibilities, and Dedar enjoys collaborating with interior designers and other luxury brands to produce specialty textiles for exclusive projects.

"Free-roaming inspiration, elegance, force of expression, the desire to experiment, a passion for precious qualities and extensive color ranges constitute the essence of Dedar's creative spirit," expresses the brand.

Read on to our exclusive interview with co-owner and daughter of Nicola and Elda, Caterina Fabrizio.

MB: Can you define the aesthetic of Dedar in just three words?

CF: Creativity, distinctive style and quality.

MB: Do you believe your personal history and connection to Dedar has enhanced the brand? If so, in what ways?

CF: My brother Raffaele and I joined the company at the end of the '90s, but Dedar was already part of us. The company was founded by our parents and since we were little children we have been involved into its life. There was no difference between family life and work life. We were a part of all of the research trips worldwide.

I think we have brought boldness into the experimentation process. The creation of fabrics are individually different from one another, from classic brocades up to linen and technological leather weaves. We have also started to dialogue externally with worlds close to ours, such as fashion and design, and we have collaborated with very interesting personalities such as Bruno Frisoni and Stephen Burks. And we have signed with great enthusiasm a very important partnership with Hermès.

MB: Since 1976, how has the company changed? And how has it remained the same?

CF: Many things have grown. Our team has grown over the last fifteen years. We originally started with a small collection and now we have 3,000 home fabrics, outdoor products, fire-retardant solutions, as well as a collection of wallpapers and wall coverings, all in more than 3,000 colors. Our clients were mostly Italian polished end customers, while nowadays we have an international clientele made of architects, interior designers, luxury hotels, yacht industries, residential properties and luxury brands.

What is unchanged is that we are still a family passionately in love with high-quality fabrics. We love to collaborate with extraordinary artisans from the Como area to create fabrics and we have a strong family spirit. At the same time, we are open to the world and we are driven by a strong will to experiment. We go above and beyond, and we experiment while being faithful to ourselves.

MB: What is "that thing" that Dedar clients can always rely on from the brand? How does Dedar differentiate from other textile brands?

CF: Creativity and style, to surprise yet being recognizable.

2. Quality - from the choice of raw materials up to the control tests during each phase of the creation process, we guarantee our fabrics to be a harmonious synthesis of aesthetic and functionality.

3. Availability - Ninety-seven percent of our fabrics are in stock to allow for a very quick delivery from Italy at a worldwide level.

MB: Describe your role in Dedar and what continues to inspire you and facilitate your creative growth and the growth of Dedar?

CF: My role is to connect my personal sentiment of style, trends and interiors to that of our customers and of the people surrounding us. We convert this approach into products, and we are able to offer innovative answers and new solutions to our clients. The exchange between us and with our artisans, our travels, observations, passions, interests in fashion or places we visit - these all continue to inspire us.

MB: What is something you would want individuals to know about Dedar that perhaps they do not know of yet?

CF: The challenge is to make people - in particular architects and interior designers - understand how Dedar can be a partner that can bring value to their projects. For example, when beginning a new project, we can create one-hundred percent custom-made products or adapt fabrics from the collection to specific requirements.

MB: How would you describe the company culture of Dedar?

CF: Being a family company is reflected in all of Dedar's core values, such as in our strong internal cohesion and team spirit. We never stop, we always push beyond giving space to new desires. We mark our own way, and we do not follow trends. We start from a strong textile know-how, and we love to explore all the possible expressive ways capable and always with boldness.

MB: Where do you see Dedar in the future?

CF: Very well established the U.S.

MB: What is the legacy of Dedar?

CF: Our legacy is that we have the freedom to personalize and express ourselves using innovative graphics, surprising colors, high-quality materials and technological innovations. We always work to keep this freedom and commitment to quality consistent in the hope to continue to stimulate other individuals' freedom of expression. And we believe we are proof that an eternal textile can bring innovative answers and ignite unexpected emotions.
