Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne's (Danai Gurira) relationship turned romantic in season 6, episode 10 ("The Next World") of "The Walking Dead," and while a lot of fans were surprised by this plot twist, Lincoln and Gurira think that the romance between their characters was inevitable.

"It's the most natural thing," Lincoln said (via People) in an exclusive behind-the-scenes interview from the upcoming "Walking Dead: The Complete Sixth Season" Blu-ray, Digital HD and DVD release. "I kept thinking, 'Of course -- it's been right in front of me all the time.' It felt like a grown-up relationship that was always meant to be."

"I think she's probably been in love with Rick for a while," said Gurira before adding that Michonne was "definitely cutting herself off from her heart."

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last February, Gurira revealed that she had started to have an inkling that producers of the show were heading in an intimate direction with the Rick and Michonne since reading the script for season 3, episode 12 ("Clear").

"It made sense to me since the "Clear" episode," Gurira said. "I remember chatting about it for the first time with [current showrunner Scott] Gimple, but back then, it wasn't his call [he wrote the episode under then-boss Glen Mazzara]."

"But when I read [the love scene] I was still kind of surprised," Gurira told Variety. "There was something surprising seeing those names on the page doing that. Seeing it in writing was like, 'Whoaaaa!' I was kind of thrown."

Lincoln told The Hollywood Reporter that he "loved" the twist on Rick and Michonne's relationship, although he admitted that taking their bond to the next level is a "strange experience."

"We've been playing a certain complicated, difficult, respectful and loving almost familial relationship. And to step through the portal into this new place was really trippy," the 42-year-old British actor said.
