'Game Of Thrones' Star Daniel Portman On What He Feels About The Nearing End Of The Series
Several news outlets including Design & Trend reported last Saturday that "Game of Thrones" will officially end after season 8. HBO, however, told BuzzFeed News yesterday that the new cabler's programming president Casey Bloys only "did confirm season 8 [at the Television Critics Association summer press tour], but didn't really say for sure that's the end [of the series]."
Either way, showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss told Variety last April that they were considering closing the epic saga with a six-episode season 8, so fans can really tell that it's truly the end of the road for the show.
As expected, a lot of people are sad about the show's nearing end -- and series star Daniel Portman is one of them.
"It was always going to happen, wasn't it?" Portman, who plays Podrick Payne on the fantasy drama, said of the show's impending conclusion in a recent interview with Digital Spy. "But it is sad. Nobody expected it to be as successful as it's been. It's just been a bit of a freak social phenomenon, unlike anything else that's ever been on television. ... I will definitely miss it once I've played him [Podrick] for the last time."
The 24-year-old actor, who has already appeared in 27 episodes of "Game of Thrones" since his character was introduced in 2012, said that working on the show is "a very individual experience."
"For everybody who's been on the show, it's launched all of us -- more or less," Portman pointed out. "All the young cast, anyway -- it's been our start. There weren't a lot of people in the young cast who were very well-known beforehand, and now most of us have some sort of following at least. That's been a real bonus of the job, aside from doing something that's such high quality and so popular, which is always great."
Portman told Digital Spy that he currently has no idea about what's in store for Podrick in season 7, but in his interview with IGN last March, he said that he would love his character to cross path with Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) again.
"I think that would be a hugely satisfying moment for the audience," Portman said of Podrick reuniting with Tyrion. "It would be wonderfully satisfying for me as an actor as well, to have that sort of dramatic -- tie off a loose end, because as soon as Tyrion sends Podrick away, neither of them are in contact with each other, and you really hope they get the chance to see each other again and that, when it's all said and done and all the war and horrors and atrocities that happen in Westeros have blown over, that they could maybe sit down and have a glass of wine together and catch up. That would be nice."
