Packers at 49'ers Game Preview
The Packers and 49'ers will face off in their season openers for the second straight year, with Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay out to revenge last year's 30-22 opening loss at home. The 49'ers defeated the Pack twice last season, with the second victory coming in the divisional round of the playoffs.
Last year, the Packers dealt with Alex Smith in game one and Kaepernick in game two. This time around, Green Bay had plenty of time to prepare for Kaepernick and the read option, but then again, Kaepernick is likely to be just as unpredictable in his first full season as the starter in San Francisco.
The 49'ers lost some key players from last year's Super Bowl team, with the biggest being the loss of safety Dashon Goldson to the Bucs. Goldson will be replaced by rookie Eric Reid. On the other side of the ball, San Francisco did add WR Anquan Boldin from the Super Bowl champion Ravens, who will help replace WR Michael Crabtree, who was lost for the season to injury.
Green Bay should have no problems throwing the football this season with Aaron Rodgers, despite the loss of WR Greg Jennings to the rival Vikings. Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb are solid options and the addition of a solid running back (rookie Eddie Lacy of Alabama) will do wonders for the Packers' offense.
James Brady of Niners Nation sees Joe Staley's matchup with Clay Matthews as the one to watch on Sunday:
"Just about anything less than unstoppable isn't good enough when you're up against Matthews. Last year, Matthews managed just 13 sacks, but that was before going down with an injury after playing in 12 games. He's one of the NFL's best pass rushers and would have a legitimate claim to the title of best pass rusher in this game if Aldon Smith hadn't come on so strong last season."
Brendan Kennedy of Acme Packing Company thinks that the Packers need to play physical:
"The Niners in two recent matchups have just been bigger, stronger, faster, nastier, filthier or whatever other adjective you can think of that would describe a Rex Ryan home movie. The Packers should have no problem in getting motivated to play this one with as much physicality as they can muster. How that turns out, who knows. But at least matching the Niners in terms of their style of play could go a long way in the Packers finally shedding their 'finesse team' label."
