Box Office Results 2013: 'Elysium,' 'We're the Millers' Eye Solid Opening Numbers

Sony is banking on a opening in the $35 million or more range, but how will the sci-fi adventure fare against the three other new films opening at theaters this weekend?
New Line's R-rated comedy We're the Millers, which stars Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston, opened Wednesday and held its no. 1 place on Thursday—earning $4.7 million for a two-day total of $11.5 million. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters also debuted on Wednesday, grossing $3.4 million on Thursday for a two-day total of $8.9 million. Disney's animated film Planes will also debut this weekend.
We're the Millers follows a fake family as the travel to Mexico to smuggle marijuana. The film, which received an A- CinemaScore, is tracking better than the comedy Horrible Bosses, which posted a three-day opening number of $28.3 million. That film also starred Sudeikis and Aniston.
Elysium, which stars Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, has received some positive reviews for its unique story, including this review from Rolling Stone's Peter Travers, who called the film a "popcorn movie with a smart theme."
