'The X-Files' Creator Chris Carter Says Fox Mulder And Dana Scully Are Never Married
In an interview with Crave Online at New York Comic Con earlier this month, David Duchovny --who plays Fox Mulder on "The X-Files" -- referred to Gillian Anderson's Dana Scully as his onscreen wife. But during last Sunday's EW Fest in New York City, series creator Chris Carter corrected Duchovny's remarks, saying that Mulder and Scully have never taken a trip down the aisle.
"They were together but never married, so that was news to me," Entertainment Weekly quoted Carter as saying. "You saw them in the second movie ['The X-Files: I Want To Believe'] -- they were obviously together and under one roof. [But] I am here to announce that is not the case coming back."
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last month, Carter teased what viewers can expect from the couple's split, and why it is important for the highly anticipated six-episode revival in terms of plot.
"We do it in an interesting way," Carter said of how the breakup will unfold in the follow-up series. "We play with that relationship [in the event series]. We put some of the tension back in that was relieved by them being together."
He added, "It added to the storytelling opportunities. It's something that I came up with; I had been thinking about it. There was always talk of [breaking them up] if we did another movie."
Unfortunately for fans, it seems that Mulder and Scully won't be back together at the end of the revival.
"In the beginning of these six episodes, we seem to be estranged," Duchovny told fans at Pittsburgh's Wizard World Comic Con when was asked about the state of the Mulder and Scully's relationship in the limited series. "[But I] don't know where it's going. I really don't know. I'm trying to think [what was] the end of the sixth episode ... It's yet to be determined."
