Recently movie star Ryan Gosling partnered up with the Farm Sanctuary and Humane Society International/ Candada to help breeding pigs on Canadian farms.

E! Online reported that the actor, and now director is trying to help eliminate gestation crates from the Code of Practice for the care and handling of pigs. Gestation crates are cages that hold pigs so tightly that they can't turn around.

Gosling wrote an opinion piece, which was published in Globe and Mail called 'A Tiny Cage is Not a life."

In the piece, the "Drive" star wrote how pregnant pigs are kept in gestation crates while they're pregnant, moved to different cages to give birth, then impregnated again and put back into the gestation crates.

Gosling wrote that he was "heartened to learn" that Canada's National Farm Animal Care Council released a draft code of practice which mandates people stop putting pigs in these crates for nearly their entire lives.

"Pigs in tiny crates suffer beyond anything most of us can easily imagine. They are unable even to turn around for weeks at a time, so that their muscles and bones deteriorate," Gosling wrote.

"And these extremely social and intelligent animals lose their minds from being denied any social or psychological stimulation at all," he added.

Gosling concluded by saying he applauds the NFACC for working to improve the lives of Canadian pigs, and that he is joining the fight.

He wrote that he would never do anything like that to his beloved dog George, and that "no compassionate Canadian would ever do to any animal.
