'Glee' Alum Darren Criss Slammed For Transphobic Joke Dissing Caitlyn Jenner
"Glee" alum Darren Criss angered a lot of fans when he made a transphobic dig aimed at Caitlyn Jenner.
The 28-year-old singer-actor joined the list of stars who have taken jabs at Jenner, formerly known as Bruce, since her transition.
This comes as a shock to many since Criss previously played a gay character for several seasons of "Glee" and is currently portraying a genderqueer singer in the Broadway musical, "Hedwig."
In fact, it was while he was on stage and performing as a rock star who assumed a female persona after a botched sex reassignment surgery that he made the transphobic joke about Jenner.
“Man, woman, man, woman, woman, man, Bruce Jenner, whatever you are," he said while in character, Hollywood Life reported.
His improvised joke fell flat and fans who witnessed the show took to Twitter to slam the actor.
Here are some of the responses from "Hedwig" fans:
"Ok but did @darrencriss really make that caitlyn jenner 'joke'?? come on man you totally know better i know you did it as 'Hedwig' but," wrote one of Criss' fans.
Twitter user Christine Delozier (@running_races) shared the tasteless joke to her followers, posting: ".....she was like 'man, woman, man woman, woman man, Bruce Jenner, whatever you are.'"
Another fan, @theatrebrains, expressed anger over Criss' insensitive jab, tweeting: "I'm so disgusted by the fact that Darren Criss is playing a trans character and still made transphobic comments about Caitlyn Jenner."
Marc Lacognata (@marclacognata) also expressed his disapproval, saying: "Tonight, Darren Criss, as HEDWIG said, 'man, woman, moman, wan, Bruce Jenner, whatever you are' and it was very distasteful."
"@DarrenCriss hey that 'joke' you made about caitlyn jenner during the show was really rude and gross you need to apologize for that," posted social media user @transbucky.
"Hedwig" fan @belleponine wrote: "@DarrenCriss hedwig is not a 'woman-thing' and caitlyn jenner is a woman. how dare you use her birthname and make her identity into a joke."
