Seth MacFarlane To Pledge Up To $1 Million To 'Reading Rainbow'
"Reading Rainbow" showed it had a large following when it reached its $1 million funding goal on Kickstarter within hours. What's not known is perhaps its biggest supporter.
That title goes to "Family Guy" creator and "A Million Ways To Die" Star Seth MacFarlane, who's is pledging up to $1 million to the "Reading Rainbow" campaign, according to Time. The fundraiser's original goal was to raise money to fund a web series that teachers would use as an instructional guide for its students. The campaign's goal has since risen to $5 million, and if that goal is reached, the new series will be available for free to 7,500 classrooms for free.
MacFarlane's assistance is purely based on good will though; he's apparently a fan of the show. The comedian and former Academy Awards host promised to match each pledge up until July 2 at 3 p.m. His publicist confirmed the information to the Associated Press. The campaign has raised $4 million, so MacFarlane's contributions would be a huge boost toward meeting the goal.
"Reading Rainbow" host LeVar Burton thanked MacFarlane in a thank you not on the campaign's Kickstarter page.
"But before you start calling your friends and spreading the word, please help me thank my friend, Seth, for his amazing generosity," Burton said. "With his help, we can make an even bigger difference for an entire generation of kids. That's just huge."
This might mean MacFarlane is eligible for one of the prizes Burton offered to pledges. Burton has offered a private dinner date with a random contributor and the opportunity to wear the same visor he wore in "Star Trek: The Next Generation."
MacFarlane has a project coming up, too. He's working on "Ted 2." The cast will return with Mila Kunis playing a more limited role this time around. Amanda Seyfried will join as the female lead. "Ted 2" will hit theaters in 2015.
