Best-Known, Unknown Design Under One Roof at Milan's Annual Furniture Fair

The fifty-first edition of the the Salone Internazionale del Mobile best known as Milan Furniture Fair, will take place from this Tuesday April 17th to the 22nd in Italy. During considered the “Design Week” from world’s best-known brands, to young, unknown designers expect more than 300, 000 visitors.

 Launched in 1961, The Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano was organized by a small group of furniture manufacturers from within the Federlegno-Arredo trade association with the aim of promoting the exportation of Italian furniture, and which soon became the most prestigious international event in the world of furniture design and production, according to its website.

The 2011 edition was attended by 282,483 trade operators, 177,964 of whom came from 154 Countries; 32,870 members of the general public and 5,967 communications operators, it added.

The convention is considered more than a trade show; families and tourists from different backgrounds come and visit more than 2,500 exhibitors. Nevertheless, for some of the designers who are participating, consider the fair in a different way. According to the New York Times, the British designer Jasper Morrison said that The Salone del Mobile should be renamed the “Salone del Marketing.” “I think it was prompted by the launch of a washing machine,” he added.

Some of the big-brands expected to see in the fair are in one hand Samsung which will present a futuristic touch-screen technology kitchen designed by Italy’s Toncelli Kitchens by Experientia and on the other hand, Mercedes-Benz, that in collaboration with the Italian manufacturer,  Formitalia Luxury Group, will unveil its first line of furniture for homes which include elegant tables and chairs.

The Salone Internazionale del Mobile is an international event recognized as the main destination to witness new design ideas first. Some of the works that will be shown in this fair, will be seen throughout the rest of 2012 in other events, such as the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York in May.
