Samsung Galaxy S5 Release Date Delay Possible Due To Camera Supply Issues
The release of the Galaxy S5 is highly-anticipated, but consumers may be facing delays for the upcoming Samsung smartphone due to camera supply issues, ETNews reports.
Lower than expected yields on the GS5's 16MP camera lens is to blame, as industry sources reportedly told the Chinese website that Samung's lens yields are at only 20 to 30 percent, which could delay the release date. The Galaxy S5 is expected to release globally in April.
ETNews adds that production of the smartphone's camera lens was supposed to start last month, but was delayed due to the complex production process. Samsung, however, doesn't see any major setbacks up ahead.
"There may be difficulties in the earlier phase of production. However, we will be able to increase the yield within a short period of time," an anonymous Samsung insider reportedly told the website.
If the report is true, Samsung could be forced to either push back the GS5 release to late April or launch it in a limited number that could quickly sell out.
The report isn't the first to claim that the Galaxy S5 release date could be delayed.
A recent fire in Korea has also been an issue, according to SamMobile.
A large fire reportedly caused issues at a factory in Korea manufacturing printed circuit boards (PCB) for the S5 after it raged on for six hours despite the immediate arrival of firefighters. A total of 287 firefighters and 80 vehicles were reportedly battling the flames and over $1 billion in equipment and components were destroyed.
While Samsung has said that it was sourcing PCBs from multiple locations, Galaxy S5 production will be affected by the fire, which has caused some to question whether Samsung will be able to release on the 11th.
